Nasty Cactus

Here’s a shot of the kind of cactus (cholla) that “attacked” that sweet little dog. Those joints or bulb come off at the slightest touch. Just approaching a cholla is risky because the ground is covered with them. This is NOT a nice cactus. Yet some people move here from the east and think how great it will be to have cactus in the yard. One planted, however, getting it out is dangerous. I know one person who thought he was being clever by planting them along his windows. Even a very stupid burglar isn’t going to wade through one of these. But this move also made it impossible for him to get at the windows. He had to hire a specialist to get them out.

That is defiinitely cholla. There are several kinds, but what really makes the difference in this shot is that it was taken in the spring after plenty of rainfall. Look at the plants around it, too. They´re all very happy and full. Many times of the year, they are far more spindly and dried up, with thorn-covered bark also falling off.
