Something New

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Talk about fireworks, once again nature outdid everyone. Not only did the show go on for days (and is still going on), for the New Year we have a new island. This is a NASA image of it. On December 19 some fishermen reported seeing an underwater volcano throwing lava some 90 feet into the air. A day later it was being observed and photographed by two NASA satellites, Terra and Aqua, with ozone levels being monitored by the Aura satellite. By December 23, the Red Sea was getting a sort of Christmas present – a new island was forming. It´s located in the Red Sea off the western coast of Yemen, and is in the chain of 10 islands called the Zubair Island Group. Scientists studying this say that the formation of new islands isn´t all that unique, and the most don´t last long because they are made up of loose debris that gets washed away quickly. Others have posted satellite images before (including me). Personally, I find them fascinating! This one seems particularly appropriate. The island may not last long, but we have a new island for the New Year. If you want more, just look up Zubair Island Group. There´s quite a bit of information available.

How will you celebrate? My son plans to take his girlfriend to Tucson. My wife and I will have a very quiet evening at home, the same as we always do. (We´re not into parties, and neither of us like being on the road New Year´s Eve.) I´ll light a fire in the fireplace, and we´ll sit on the comfy new furniture and watch a movie or two. Limited fireworks are legal in Arizona again, so I got some. Anything that flies up into the air, like a rocket, or that explodes with more than a gentle pop are still illegal. Ours won´t be anywhere near nature´s fireworks in forming an island, but it will be fun. Mostly they´re cardboard cans that blow off colored sparks. Pretty harmless – although last year one lit a tiny fire in the grass that put itself out in a matter of seconds.

New Year´s Day will also be quiet. I don´t think even her brother will be coming. It will be just the eight of us – me, wife, Gus, Mabel, Kage, Joe-Joe, Sophie and Gordie – although Gordie will likely stay in his cavern and watch tortoise touchdowns on TV. (I think the Toledo Tortoises are playing the Seattle Sulcatas in the big game.) Also invited is a very large spiral-cut ham, and a bag of taters destined to become potato salad. I´m making my world-famous molasses bread.

I just have to advertise two things. One is that the new issue of Nicker Stories is up. The website is very difficult to remember so I will repeat it. To find Nicker Stories, type in nickerstories.com. Whew. That is really difficult to remember. The other thing is that I got something really special in the mail. Kathleen McCarthy sent me a bag of purple shamrock bulbs. If you were around last year at this time, I got the idea of treating Mom to a winter filled with flowers. One of them was this purple shamrock, and from that came Paulie the Passionate Purple Plant from the Pampas of Peru. (You can read about his adventures in Nicker Stories, too.) He was scattered all over the yard by the dogs. Kathleen was so sweet that she sent me another bag of bulbs, in part to honor Mom´s memory. So, ad #2 is easytogrowbulbs.com, where Kathleen works. These are fantastic people!
