Metropolitan Opera House

This is the inside of the Metropolitan Opera House in downtown Iowa Falls. I can’t tell you much about the mural, but can about the theater. It’s 3 stories tall, and had its first public performance on Dec 27, 1899 to an audience of 800. It was called, “a big time theater in a little town.” The main floor sat 441, and the balcony had seats for 390 more, so that first night was pretty much a packed house. The top floor had a ballroom, and still does. (I don’t know if it is still in use.) In its early years they stages operas, plays and concerts. John Phillip Sousa and his band played there (among many others). In the 1920s, silent films were shown. Then in 1930, a sound system was installed. Since then, showing movies has become the largest use of the theater. NEW movies. I can give a personal example. In 1964 my family was once again in Iowa Falls for the family reunion. The night before, my sister and I went to the Metropolitan to watch a brand new movie … “A Hard Day’s Night,” starring the Beatles. I think back, too … before Mom met Dad, she went on a number of dates at the Metropolitan, and also ate at the Princess almost right across the street. Look around. Even small towns often hold surprises. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolitan_Opera_House_(Iowa_Falls,_Iowa)

I might be looking for some snow photos, like the one Phyllis007 put up. Go to NICKERSTORIES.COM to see what was done with Marilou´s shots. I have several ideas in mind. One has to do with snowmen. More on my mind right now, though ... my Mom´s birthday is Jan 9. I have in mind a story where Nicker returns to Lake Edie, this time with snow. That story is already taking some fascinating twists. Marilou saw a little of this working with me on the cranberry story. THIS one began simply with Nicker in the snow (can you imagine the snow angel a sea dragon would make?). Now, a lady from Guatemala told Mom how she visits Michigan to get Cornish pasties, like those that celebrated the Treloar Children´s Hospital in Wales, and Marci, my artist lives in Michigan, while Andrew might be doing the art for Mom´s story and wants to bring in Chinese calligraphy, and China is a main source of stories about dragons, but so is Wales, and in the ancient Celtic language a word for the water horse, or sea dragon, is Nykkur, but they didn´t know how to spell in modern English, so ....

SO ... I want some snowy shots. And for the Christmas story, I can use some iced-over lake shots, preferably a small lake. Skid marks from Santa´s sleigh would be nice.

Gene, I hope the snow shots come your way. Cool mural, the opera house would be big by most standards up to the 60´s era. Nicker has many cousins across the world..China, Wales, Germany(these were Nordic tales) and maybe many others. Sounds like a great story about to begin again!
