Gordie Makes a New Cavern
Gordie has been busy. I’m not sure why but he has closed the entrance to his treasured cavern and has started a new one. The only thing I can figure is that another skunk came into the yard last week. Maybe it went to Gordie’s cave the way the last one did. Or maybe the dogs caused a collapse. A few days ago I saw a cloud of dust and dirt, and a Gordie furiously working. I went out this afternoon to have a look. Obviously, this is much more familiar to me but perhaps you remember the direction of that first cavern. It was going almost due north. Now it’s just an indented ramp. Right next to it is a new hole. He must have been in a hurry because this one goes deep into the ground must faster. The odd thing is that after the initial construction, I haven’t seen much dust coming out. That makes me wonder if he didn’t simply build a new front patio, and underground dug his way back into the original cavern. I know he has a map in that tiny brain of the entire yard, so why not a map of his diggings? For now, I’m leaving him alone. In a few more days, I’ll go out with lights and a long stick.

Gordie appears to just be remodeling to me... don´t worry dad! ;) I am wondering if you are doing the very first daily log of a critter of this type, that was not in captivity. I see it becoming a well loved and read book right before my eyes. That is great, and so are you my friend. I will have a copy of Gordie´s biography one day to share with my friends. No? Oh, what a responsibility that will leave one day to Dan. Thinking of the social pressure of Gordie´s fans, like me. Legacy of Gordie unfolding before us... is a wonderful thing. =) |

Ha ha...Im sure he knows what he´s doing and why. I wonder how long ago his last hole was dug?? I remember digging many deep forts in the ground when I was a kid for a few years...a way of having my own club house. They´ed keep filling them in and I´d start a new one somewhere else. It was a lotta hard work..but I had all the time in the world then and felt it was well worth it. :) |

The Cavern is/was 3 years old, almost to the day. He has been working on it slowly all this time. The basic cavern took him a matter of hours. Actually, I saw the dirt flying and he was underground in a few minutes. The same was true this time. He was on the surface a bit longer because he was also busy burying the original entrance. Then down he went. |

We need to get to the bottom of this digging ..... I have heard of a man in Russia (in a fable) who understood the language of birds. But is there someone out there who can communicate with a turtle? (smile) |
